In the same time, the weakest support for the tax was reported in Quebec (47%). Only 30% of Atlantic Canadians say that foreign buyers are pushing up housing prices.
It’s been more than a quarter since the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions introduced a stricter mortgage stress test, and 52% of Canadians still believe it was the right decision. Meanwhile, 24% disagree and 24% are unsure.
When it comes to the notion that the new test protects the national economy, 47% support this idea, 20% disagree and 33% can’t tell.
Nevertheless, 48% of respondents believe the stress test makes it harder for first-time buyers to purchase a property, 25% don’t share this opinion and 27% remain unsure.
