Kmiec has already proposed studying the mortgage rules, but the offer was declined. This time, he plans to act until the offer gets approval.
“I will not approve travel of the committee until we approve a study on mortgages,” – said Kmiec. “I’m acting reasonable, as I’m ready to make amendments to my motion, I’m open to collaboration, and so I suggest creating a subcommittee. A home is the most important financial decision and asset Canadians will probably make, that’s why we need to study the situation”.
“The committee should study the stress test because a report of theirs from several years ago noted that the government has to help first-time homebuyers and not implement general policy for everyone”.
“If we have a problem with an extremely high debt level among Canadians, why do they make it even more difficult for people to keep homes they already have, especially in case of low-ratio mortgages? Those homeowners provided more than 20% down payment, and now they are facing more expensive mortgage costs. It’s unjust.”
