Someone sent a letter to media, stating they have the stolen data and they need $1-million ransom from banks by 11:59 p.m. Otherwise, they will sell the information to criminals.
“Criminals will use Simplii and BMO client data to receive credit products with the helps of social insurance number, date of birth and other personal info,” – the senders threatened.
The email also included a sample of the information: the names, dates of birth, SIN and account balances of an Ontario man and a B.C. woman.
Moreover, the woman confirmed that this information (even the answers to her three security questions) was right.
According to BMO, the fraudsters operated outside the country.
Simplii says the investigation goes on, and it will inform clients if it is determined they have been affected by the incident.
“In our opinion, it’s important to notify clients so that they could also take additional measures on securing their data,” – Martin said. “In case a client becomes a victim of fraud because of this issue, we promise to return 100% of the lost money,” – the release said.
