As a matter of fact, the native peoples of the Americas organised festivals for celebrating good harvest even before the European explorers came here. Meanwhile, the first European thanksgivings were held to give thanks not for the harvest, but mainly for some certain fortune. One of such examples is the ceremony held by the explorer Martin Frobisher in 1578 when he finished his long journey in search of a northern passage from Europe to Asia.
It should be noted that Thanksgiving Day in Canada is connected with the European harvest festivals. Among the main symbols of this holiday is the so-called “Horn of Plenty” filled with fruit and vegetables. It was also the symbol of bounty in ancient Greece. In addition to it, there are many other symbols of Thanksgiving Day in Canada: turkeys, pumpkins, ears of corn etc.
